From Kelly's Post Office Directory of Essex, Herts, Middlesex, Kent, Surrey and Sussex, 1867

PAGHAM is a parish, 7 miles south from Chichester, 4 south-west from Bognor, in the Western division of the county, hundred of Aldwick, Chichester rape, county court district, diocese and archdeaconry, rural deanery of Pagham, and West Hampnett union. It is bounded on the north by North Mundham and Merston, on the west partly by Pagham Harbour, on the east by South Bersted, and on the south by the sea. The village is situated in the south-west part of the parish, near the church and harbour, and consists of a few cottages. The church of St. Thomas a Becket is a handsome and commodious structure in the Early English style, with tower, spire, nave, and chancel. The register dates from 1736. The living is a vicarage, value 300 per annum, with residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and held by the Rev. Ralph Barker, B.A., of St. Peter's College, Cambridge. The area is 4,376 acres, and the population in 1861 was 988.
ALDWICK is a tithing, formerly a place of some importance, and gives name to the hundred. Here is a small chapel of ease, built by the Rev. Edward Houghton Johnson, M.A., for the accommodation of the district of Aldwick which will contain about 300 people. Aldwick Place, the seat and property of B. B. Cabbell, Esq., is pleasantly situated, commanding fine sea views, near Bognor.
SOUTH MUNDHAM and NYTIMBER are also tithings; LAGNESS and ROSE GREEN are hamlets belonging to this parish.

Parish Clerk, Thomas Bacon.
