From Kelly's Post Office Directory of Essex, Herts, Middlesex, Kent, Surrey and Sussex, 1867

BROADWATER is a parish, in the Western division of the county, rape of Bramber, Brightford hundred, East Preston union, and Worthing county court district. The church is a cruciform building, partly Norman and Saxon: there is a beautiful stained glass window, in commemoration of the late rector and the Rev. William Davison: it also has an organ. The living is a rectory, yearly value 602, with residence, in the gift, of and held by, the Rev. Edward King Elliott, M.A., of Trinity College, Cambridge. A cattle and toy fair is held here on the 20th of June and 2Oth of October. In and near Broadwater are some very pleasant residences. Offington, formerly the seat of the De la Warr family, is now the property of T. Gainsford, Esq. The parish comprises 2,240 acres; the population in 1861 was 661.
