ASHBURNHAM is a parish, near the road from Battle to Hailsham, 5 miles west from Battle railway station, in the Eastern division of the county, Foxearle hundred, Hastings rape and county court district, diocese of Chichester, archdeaconry of Lewes, deanery of Dallington, and union of Battle. The church of St. James is ancient: it contains monuments of the Ashburnham family. The living is a vicarage, with Penhurst rectory annexed, joint annual value 350, with residence, in the gift of the Earl of Ashburnham, and held by the Rev. John Read Munn, D.A., of Worcester College, Oxford. Here is a school for boys and girls, supported by the Earl of Ashburnham. Ashburnbam Place, the seat of the Earl of Ashburnham, lord of the manor and chief landowner, is a noble mansion of red brick, situated in a fine and well-wooded park. The parish comprises 3,648 acres; the population in 1861 was 844.
